Face-Fit Testing
Face-Fit Testing in Derby
Welding fume, paint spray and grinding dust all make RPE critical in Derby engineering. We fit test on site, around your shifts, with records ready for customer audit.
Professional Face-Fit Testing in Derby
If your employees wear tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment, the law requires it to be face-fit tested to the individual wearing it. A mask that does not seal offers almost no protection, and no amount of training or supervision compensates for a poor fit. We provide HSE-compliant qualitative face-fit testing at your premises.
Based in Coalville, Leicestershire, Integral Safety is ideally positioned to serve businesses in Derby. Choosing a local consultancy means testing at your premises on a date that suits your production schedule, without sending people away or losing a shift.
Derby's engineering and manufacturing base makes face-fit testing a routine requirement rather than an occasional one. Welding fume was reclassified as a human carcinogen, which sharpened expectations considerably: fume control and suitable RPE are now expected wherever welding takes place, including mild steel.
Alongside welding, the paint and surface treatment firms in the supply chain use isocyanate-containing coatings where RPE failure has serious consequences, and grinding and finishing operations generate respirable dust. Customer audits in this supply chain routinely ask to see fit test records by name.
Business and Industry in Derby
Derby is one of the country's leading centres for advanced manufacturing and engineering, with aerospace, rail and automotive at its core and a deep supply chain of specialist SMEs feeding them. That supply chain is where most of our Derby work sits: precision engineering, fabrication, surface treatment and assembly firms who face higher-hazard processes and demanding customer audits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our customer audit asks for fit test records. What do they want to see?
Typically an individual record per wearer naming the person, the exact make, model and size of mask tested, the test method and result, the date, and who carried out the test. A generic statement that "all staff are fit tested" does not satisfy an auditor. We provide records in that form.
Do welders need fit testing even for mild steel?
Yes. Since welding fume was reclassified as a carcinogen, the expectation is that effective fume control is provided for all welding including mild steel, indoors or outdoors, with suitable RPE where extraction alone does not adequately control exposure. Where that RPE is tight-fitting, it must be fit tested.
Do you carry out face-fit testing in Derby?
Yes. We come to your premises anywhere in Derby and the surrounding area and test on site, which avoids travel time and lets us work around your shifts. Each test takes around 20 minutes and the wearer receives an individual record.
Is face-fit testing a legal requirement?
Yes, where tight-fitting RPE is used. COSHH, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 all require the equipment to be suitable for the wearer, and HSE guidance is explicit that this means fit testing. A wearer who is clean shaven at the seal is also essential, as facial hair breaks the seal regardless of the test result.
