About the course

Course Overview

IOSH Managing Safely Refresher is a one-day course for managers and supervisors who have already passed IOSH Managing Safely. It brings their knowledge back up to date, reminds them of the habits that keep people safe, and shows their employer, clients and auditors that their competence is current. IOSH recommends a refresher around three years after the full course, and many customers, frameworks and accreditation schemes now expect one.

Why it matters

Why Refresh Your Training

Passing the course once is a good start. Keeping it current is what customers, auditors and insurers look for.

  • Certificates go stale Customers, tenders and accreditation schemes increasingly ask when a manager last trained, not just whether they did.
  • Knowledge fades Three years on, most managers have forgotten detail they once knew well. One day puts it back at the front of their mind.
  • Workplaces change New processes, new people and new risks since the original course. The refresher is applied to how you work today.
  • It shows you take it seriously Refresher training is clear evidence that you keep managers competent, which is what an insurer, auditor or inspector will look for.

Learning outcomes

What You Will Learn

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Recall and apply the core principles of IOSH Managing Safely
  • Assess risks and choose sensible, proportionate controls
  • Explain their legal duties as a manager and why they matter
  • Spot common hazards in their own workplace and act on them
  • Investigate incidents and near misses to find the real cause
  • Measure safety performance and lead a positive safety culture

A practical walk through hazards, risk and the steps of a sound risk assessment.

  3. Controlling risks

The hierarchy of control and choosing measures that actually work on the shop floor.

  4. Understanding your responsibilities

Legal duties, the cost of getting it wrong and what good management looks like.

  5. Identifying hazards

Common workplace hazards, from manual handling and machinery to stress and fire.

  6. Investigating incidents

Finding root causes and making sure the same thing does not happen twice.

  7. Measuring performance

Active and reactive monitoring, audits and keeping improvement going.

  8. Protecting the environment

Environmental impacts and the manager's role in reducing them.

Assessment and certificate

The day finishes with a short multiple-choice assessment covering the course content. Delegates who pass receive an IOSH Managing Safely Refresher certificate.

Who Should Attend

Anyone who holds an IOSH Managing Safely certificate and manages people, processes or sites: managers, supervisors, team leaders and site leads in any sector. Ideally delegates passed Managing Safely around three years ago. If it has been much longer, or a delegate never completed the full course, we will tell you honestly whether the full three-day course is the better choice.

Questions

IOSH Managing Safely Refresher: Common Questions

How often should managers take the IOSH Managing Safely Refresher?

IOSH recommends a refresher around three years after passing Managing Safely. There is no legal deadline, but customers, frameworks and accreditation schemes increasingly look for training within the last three years, so refreshing on that cycle keeps you covered.

Does an IOSH Managing Safely certificate expire?

The certificate does not carry an expiry date, but knowledge and expectations move on. Many clients and auditors treat a certificate older than three years as out of date, which is exactly the gap the refresher closes.

Who can attend the refresher?

Anyone who has passed IOSH Managing Safely. If a delegate passed a long time ago, or never completed the full course, we will advise whether the full three-day IOSH Managing Safely course is the right step instead.

Is there an exam?

Yes, a short multiple-choice assessment at the end of the day. It checks understanding rather than trying to trip anyone up, and we prepare delegates for it throughout the course.

Can you run the refresher for a group of our managers at our site?

Yes, and for groups it is usually the most cost-effective option. We deliver it in-house across Leicester, Leicestershire, Nottingham, Derby and the wider East Midlands, and draw the examples from your own workplace.

Can you deliver IOSH Managing Safely Refresher at our premises?

Yes. We deliver this course in-house at your premises, or as part of our scheduled courses in Leicestershire. For groups of six or more, in-house training is often the most cost-effective option.

Can the course be tailored to our workplace?

Yes. We use examples, scenarios and hazards from your industry and your own site wherever we can, so delegates can apply what they learn straight away.

How long is the course?

The course runs for 1 day. We can schedule it to fit around shifts and busy periods.

Is the course available online?

Yes. IOSH Managing Safely Refresher can be delivered in a classroom or online, whichever suits your team best.
