About This Service

HSE compliant qualitative face-fit testing delivered at your premises. We test tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to ensure your workers are properly protected. Instant certification for competent wearers.

What We Assess

Tight-fitting disposable masks (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3)
Reusable half masks
Full face masks
Powered respirator hoods
Mask seal and fit quality
Facial hair interference
Compatibility with other PPE
Correct donning technique
User understanding and competence

Our Process

1

Pre-Test Preparation

Candidates must be clean-shaven in the mask seal area and should not eat, drink, or smoke for at least 15 minutes before testing. We brief each person on the process.

2

Mask Selection

We ensure the correct type and size of mask is available for testing. We can test multiple mask types to find one that fits.

3

Sensitivity Test

A taste sensitivity test confirms the wearer can detect the test solution. Those who cannot taste it may need quantitative testing instead.

4

Fit Test Exercises

With the mask fitted, we conduct a series of exercises including normal breathing, deep breathing, head movements, talking, and grimacing while checking for solution detection.

5

Pass or Fail

If no solution is tasted during any exercise, the test is passed. If solution is detected, we try refitting or an alternative mask.

6

Certification

Successful candidates receive a fit test certificate recording the mask make, model, and size they are cleared to use. Records are provided for your files.

What You'll Receive

  • HSE compliant qualitative fit testing
  • Individual fit test certificates

Frequently Asked Questions

What is face-fit testing?

Face-fit testing checks that a tight-fitting mask seals properly to the wearers face. Without a good seal, contaminated air can leak in around the edges, reducing protection. Testing ensures the mask actually works for each individual.

Is face-fit testing a legal requirement?

Yes, if your risk assessment identifies the need for tight-fitting RPE, you must ensure it fits the wearer. The HSE requires face-fit testing as the reliable way to confirm this. It applies to FFP masks, half masks, and full face respirators.

How often should face-fit testing be repeated?

Face-fit testing should be repeated if the wearer changes mask type or size, has significant weight change, dental work, facial scarring, or any other change that might affect the fit. Many employers re-test annually as good practice.

Can people with beards be fit tested?

No. Facial hair in the seal area prevents a tight-fitting mask from sealing properly. Workers must be clean-shaven in the area where the mask seals to the face. This applies to stubble as well as beards.

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative testing?

Qualitative testing uses a taste test method and is suitable for most masks. Quantitative testing uses a machine to measure the actual seal and is required for some full face masks. We provide qualitative testing which covers most workplace needs.

How long does each fit test take?

Each individual fit test takes approximately 15-20 minutes including briefing, sensitivity test, fit test exercises, and certification. We can test multiple people in a session.

Key Benefits

  • Legal compliance with RPE requirements
  • Confidence that masks actually protect workers
  • Reduced risk of occupational illness
  • Individual certification for each wearer
  • On-site testing saves time and travel
  • Identify workers who need alternative RPE
  • Meet contract and accreditation requirements

What We Assess

Mask seal and facial fit
Correct mask size selection
Facial hair that may affect seal
Spectacles or eyewear compatibility
Correct donning and doffing technique
Strap adjustment and positioning
Mask condition and serviceability
User comfort and tolerance
Breathing resistance acceptability
Communication ability while wearing RPE

Our Process

1

Pre-Test Preparation

We confirm the mask types to be tested and check that participants have not eaten, drunk (except water), or smoked for at least 15 minutes before testing. We also check for facial hair that might affect the seal.

2

Sensitivity Test

Before the main fit test, we conduct a sensitivity test to ensure the wearer can detect the test solution. This confirms they will be able to identify any leakage during the fit test.

3

Mask Fitting

We help the wearer select the correct size mask and ensure it is fitted correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions. We check strap positioning and seal quality.

4

Fit Test Exercises

The wearer performs a series of exercises while wearing the mask inside a test hood - including normal breathing, deep breathing, head movements, talking, and bending over. We check for any taste of the test solution.

5

Certification

If the test is passed, we issue an instant certificate recording the mask make, model, and size that fits. If failed, we can try alternative masks or sizes until we find one that fits correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does face-fit testing take?
Each individual test takes approximately 15-20 minutes. We can typically test 3-4 people per hour, depending on how many mask types need to be tested. For larger groups, we recommend scheduling a dedicated testing day.
Can you test disposable masks?
Yes, we can test disposable FFP masks as well as reusable half-masks and full-face masks. Each mask type requires a separate test, so if workers use both disposable FFP3s and reusable half-masks, both must be tested.
How often should face-fit testing be repeated?
There is no fixed legal requirement for re-testing frequency. However, testing should be repeated if the wearer has significant weight changes, dental work affecting facial shape, facial scarring, or if a different mask is selected. Annual re-testing is considered good practice.
What if someone fails the fit test?
If someone fails with one mask, we can try alternative masks, sizes, or styles until we find one that fits correctly. Different face shapes suit different masks, so failure with one type does not mean all masks will fail.
Can people with beards be fit tested?
Facial hair in the seal area of a tight-fitting mask will prevent an adequate seal and the person will fail the fit test. Workers requiring RPE must be clean-shaven in the seal area. Alternatives like powered air respirators may be suitable for those who cannot shave.
