Professional HAVS Testing in Leicester
Hand-arm vibration syndrome is permanent, entirely preventable and one of the most common causes of long-term occupational ill-health in industry. If your employees regularly use grinders, sanders, breakers, needle guns or similar tools, you need to know their exposure and put controls around it. We assess exposure and help you build a programme that works.
Based in Coalville, Leicestershire, Integral Safety is ideally positioned to serve businesses in Leicester. Choosing a local consultancy means an assessment carried out while your people are doing the actual work, with a consultant who can return easily to review it.
Hand-arm vibration risk turns up across Leicester's manufacturing base wherever powered hand tools are used for a meaningful part of the day: fabrication and metalwork, plastics finishing, maintenance departments, and construction and grounds maintenance operations.
The recurring mistake is assuming exposure is acceptable because nobody has complained. HAVS develops slowly and the early symptoms, tingling and numbness in the fingers, are easy to dismiss. By the time someone reports blanching, permanent damage has usually been done.
Business and Industry in Leicester
Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and its economy is unusually broad. Textiles and garment manufacturing still employ thousands across the north and east of the city, sitting alongside food production, plastics, printing, logistics and a large public sector anchored by two universities and the hospital trust. That mix means a consultant walking into a Leicester business could be looking at industrial sewing machines one day and a commercial kitchen the next.
Business parks and estates we work on
Getting to you
Leicester is about 20 minutes from our Coalville base on the A50 and M1, so we can usually offer a same-week site visit and, for urgent work, often next-day. We cover the city centre and every one of the outlying business parks.
What We Commonly Find in Leicester
Recurring issues we come across doing this work locally. If any of these sound familiar, they are all fixable.
- Tool registers listing manufacturers' vibration figures rather than real-world values
- No record of trigger time, so exposure cannot actually be calculated
- Old, poorly maintained tools vibrating far more than their stated figures
- Health surveillance not in place despite exposure clearly above the action value

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you work out our exposure in a Leicester workplace?
We look at the tools actually in use, their real vibration magnitude rather than the optimistic figure on the data sheet, and how long they are genuinely in contact with the work. Trigger time is the part most employers overestimate and it makes an enormous difference to the calculation.
What are the early signs of HAVS we should watch for?
Tingling and numbness in the fingers, particularly at night or after using tools, and reduced grip strength or dexterity. Later comes blanching, where fingers go white in the cold and are painful on rewarming. Damage at the blanching stage is permanent, which is why health surveillance is designed to catch the earlier signs.
Do you provide HAVS assessment in Leicester?
Yes. We work with employers throughout Leicester and the surrounding area, assessing exposure on site during normal operations, because a tool's stated vibration figure and its real-world exposure are rarely the same thing.
What are the exposure action and limit values?
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set a daily exposure action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8), above which you must take action to reduce exposure and provide health surveillance, and a daily exposure limit value of 5 m/s² A(8), which must not be exceeded. These are calculated over an eight-hour reference period, so both the tool and the trigger time matter.
