HAVS Testing
HAVS Testing and Assessment in Derby
Grinding, needle gunning and fettling put Derby engineering firms squarely in scope. We quantify exposure properly so you can act on numbers rather than assumptions.
Professional HAVS Testing in Derby
Hand-arm vibration syndrome is permanent, entirely preventable and one of the most common causes of long-term occupational ill-health in industry. If your employees regularly use grinders, sanders, breakers, needle guns or similar tools, you need to know their exposure and put controls around it. We assess exposure and help you build a programme that works.
Based in Coalville, Leicestershire, Integral Safety is ideally positioned to serve businesses in Derby. Choosing a local consultancy means an assessment carried out while your people are doing the actual work, with a consultant who can return easily to review it.
Derby has probably the highest concentration of hand-arm vibration risk in the region, because so much of its economy involves finishing metal. Fettling, linishing, grinding, needle gunning and die dressing are all high-vibration operations, and they are often done for extended periods.
This is also a supply chain where customer audits ask specific questions. A tier one manufacturer will want to see your exposure calculations, your tool register, and evidence of health surveillance for anyone above the action value. Vague assurances do not survive that conversation.
Business and Industry in Derby
Derby is one of the country's leading centres for advanced manufacturing and engineering, with aerospace, rail and automotive at its core and a deep supply chain of specialist SMEs feeding them. That supply chain is where most of our Derby work sits: precision engineering, fabrication, surface treatment and assembly firms who face higher-hazard processes and demanding customer audits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an assessment satisfy our customer's audit requirement?
A properly documented one usually will. What auditors look for is a tool inventory with real vibration values, a calculation of daily exposure for each role, identification of who is above the action and limit values, the controls in place, and health surveillance for those who need it. We produce the assessment in that form.
What can we actually do to reduce exposure?
In order of effectiveness: change the process so the tool is not needed, choose genuinely lower-vibration tools and keep them maintained, reduce trigger time through job rotation or work planning, and keep hands warm. Buying gloves and hoping is not a control. In many Derby workshops the biggest single gain comes from replacing worn tools, because a badly maintained grinder can vibrate at several times its rated figure.
Do you provide HAVS assessment in Derby?
Yes. We work with employers throughout Derby and the surrounding area, assessing exposure on site during normal operations, because a tool's stated vibration figure and its real-world exposure are rarely the same thing.
What are the exposure action and limit values?
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set a daily exposure action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8), above which you must take action to reduce exposure and provide health surveillance, and a daily exposure limit value of 5 m/s² A(8), which must not be exceeded. These are calculated over an eight-hour reference period, so both the tool and the trigger time matter.
